Choir Section Lead Positions Now Open

The Northumberland Orchestra & Choir (NOC) is seeking talented and collaborative singers to fill the positions of Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass Section Leads for the 2017-18 concert season. Working with Choral Director Mitchell Cox, Music Director John Kraus, and a full SATB choir, the successful applicants will be paid a modest honorarium and will possess the following qualifications and characteristics:

  • extensive choral experience
  • experience as a soloist would be considered an asset
  • strong vocal skills and vocal understanding
  • excellent sight-reading skills
  • ability to work with all types of people
  • ability to teach in a patient and positive manner
  • comfort level with languages (especially French, German, Italian)
  • ability to play parts on piano
  • familiarity with music digital technology tools
  • a strong sense of commitment, reliable attendance and punctuality

Responsibilities of the Section Lead positions are as follows:

  • attend all rehearsals (approx. 43) and performances (5)
  • support and encourage section members, making sure each member has director’s notes written accurately in their scores
  • track section attendance and follow-up with absent members
  • arrange and lead sectional rehearsals as required, focusing on diction, tone quality and entrances
  • create rehearsal or listening aids
  • sing solo sections in choral works as needed
  • participate in the audition process for new members
  • blend with the section in order to enhance balance
  • meet with Choral Director/Music Director as required

The choir rehearses on Tuesday evenings at Trinity United Church in Cobourg beginning in early September through to early May.  Some Thursday and Friday joint orchestra/choir rehearsals are also part of the schedule.

Qualified candidates should submit a letter of interest and résumé to the NOC President via email at by no later than September 1, 2017.  Interviews and auditions for these positions will be scheduled in July and August.
